Enugu Rangers head coach, Imama Amapakabo has stressed the need for his charges to remain focussed ahead of this weekend’s Caf Champions League clash with Egyptian club, Zamalek.
The Nigerian champions go toe to toe with last season’s runners up in Caf’s premiere club competition with a place in the group stages, the reward for the victor over two legs.
Amapakabo is confident Rangers will claim a positive result in Egypt against the highly-rated ‘WhiteKnight’.
“Our last game in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) against Rivers United is a prelude to what will happen this weekend against Zamalek.
“It is now up to me as a coach to see what the deficiencies of my team are.
“We go to Egypt with confidence that we can get a positive result as we strive to do Nigeria proud in this prestigious competition,” Amapakabo told supersport.com.
The intelligent trainer then took the time to discuss Rangers’ underwhelming start to the NPFL season.
Rangers, the reigning champions, are just above the relegation zone in the current NPFL standings having amassed 12 out of a possible 30 points thus far.
Amapakabo is struggling to come to terms with such a poor start to the campaign especially as he has kept the core of his title-winning side from last season.
“I virtually have the same set of players I had last season that won the league.
“I think it (recent underwhelming performances) has to do with self-belief.
“I will say it is my problem to make the team play to create chances but I will also say it is the problem of the players, technically, to convert the chances that they create,” he said.
Rangers currently sit in 16th place on the NPFL log.
